Full job description

1.1 The Business

Market leading manufacturer based in the North West. Part of a £500m Group they are embarking on a radical re-platforming & transformation of the their business and are in need of a small number of the best people

1.2 Purpose

Lead the definition and design of three connected digital products — a customer portal, a customer website, and an internal operations tool — from discovery through to build-ready design. This is a senior, autonomous role: the sole product and design authority on the programme, owning what gets built, in what order, and what it looks like when it ships — with every design grounded in user-centred design best practice. The role runs ahead of the build so the development team always has validated, specified work in front of it.

1.3 Key Responsibilities

  • Own product discovery across all three products: research with customers, installers and internal users; establish and evidence what each product must do before it is built.
  • Map user journeys end to end for each product and use them as the backbone of design and prioritisation decisions.
  • Set scope, priority and sequencing across the portfolio; own the backlog end to end.
  • Design platforms and user interfaces grounded in user-centred design best practice: journeys, prototypes, high-fidelity UI, and a single design system spanning all three products — well-designed around the user, not merely functional front-ends.
  • Validate with real users before build; make usability testing the default working method.
  • Produce build-ready specifications and acceptance criteria the development team works from directly.
  • Operate as the design and product voice at programme level, alongside the Group IT Director and technical leads.

1.4 Experience & Skills

  • Senior-level track record: has led product design on shipped products, not contributed to them.
  • Demonstrable UX depth: user research, journey mapping, and user-centred design methods, with portfolio evidence of where they changed what was built.
  • Genuine dual capability — product ownership judgement and hands-on design craft, both evidenced in portfolio.
  • Has taken at least one product from blank sheet to live, ideally as the sole or lead designer.
  • B2B, customer portal or self-service experience strongly valued; manufacturing, construction products or trade-sector exposure a plus.
  • Thrives with full autonomy: no design team, no design ops, no cover — and no one to defer to.

If this is you, and you are enough of a completer/finisher to have actually read the advert, please apply but also call Andrew Clews on 07974 346 526 to discuss your credentials and get a full brief on the client

Pay: £85,000.00-£95,000.00 per year

Work Location: Hybrid remote in Blackburn (Lancashire, North West Region, England)
