Full job description

About Realnet

Realnet is an established web development and digital marketing agency based in Great Shelford, just outside Cambridge. We help businesses grow through effective websites, e-commerce solutions and digital marketing.

We currently host and manage over 130 websites across WordPress, WooCommerce and other platforms, supporting a wide range of businesses.

We're looking for an enthusiastic Junior Web Developer to join our team. This is a great opportunity for someone with some practical WordPress experience who wants to develop their technical skills and build a career in web development.

The Role

You'll work alongside our experienced developer, designers and digital marketing team, helping to build, improve and support websites for our customers.

The role offers a mix of website development, technical troubleshooting and hosting, with responsibilities including:

  • Investigating and resolving website issues, including bugs and compatibility problems.
  • Building and updating WordPress and WooCommerce websites using themes, plugins and page builders.
  • Developing solutions to customer requirements, researching options and recommending practical approaches.
  • Making website improvements using HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript.
  • Supporting website hosting, including domains, DNS, SSL, databases and server configurations.
  • Monitoring website performance, security and reliability, using our management tools to maintain and update websites.
  • Assisting with website migrations, backups and testing.

About You

We're looking for someone who enjoys understanding how technology works, likes solving problems and is keen to learn.

You don't need commercial experience, but you should already have some hands-on experience with WordPress, whether through personal projects, education, freelance work or employment.

Essential skills and qualities:

  • Practical experience of WordPress and an understanding of how themes, plugins and the platform work.
  • A basic working knowledge of HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript.
  • Good logical thinking and problem-solving ability.
  • A willingness to research unfamiliar technical challenges and come up with ideas.
  • Good attention to detail and pride in producing quality work.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.

Desirable experience:

  • WooCommerce or other e-commerce platforms.
  • WordPress page builders, particularly Divi.
  • MySQL databases.
  • Website hosting, DNS and server management.
  • Website performance optimisation, caching and security.

We'd particularly welcome applications from people who enjoy experimenting with websites and technology in their spare time and can show us examples of things they've created.

Training and Development

You'll receive hands-on training and support from our experienced team, with opportunities to develop your coding, WordPress and hosting skills.

As your experience grows, you'll take on more complex projects and greater technical responsibility.

For suitable candidates, we can also support a recognised apprenticeship qualification alongside the role, subject to eligibility and the availability of an appropriate programme.

What We Offer

  • Salary of £20,000–£26,000 depending on experience.
  • Full-time, permanent employment.
  • Hybrid working opportunities following an initial office-based training period.
  • On-the-job training and professional development.
  • A varied portfolio of commercial websites and technical challenges.
  • A supportive team based in Great Shelford, Cambridge.

How to Apply

Please send us your CV and a short introduction explaining your interest in the role.

We'd also love to see examples of websites or technical projects you've worked on, whether personal, educational or commercial.
