About the Role

Probeck is looking for a Web Application Developer to join the business and help deliver bespoke web applications and websites for clients across a range of industries.

This is primarily a development role. The successful candidate will work on both new and existing applications, helping to build new functionality, investigate and resolve issues, develop websites from supplied designs and gradually take ownership of complete projects.

The role is suited to somebody who enjoys development work, solving problems and producing high-quality finished products. Attention to detail is particularly important. We would rather a project takes a little longer and is delivered properly than be rushed and require repeated corrections afterwards.

The position is primarily home-based, although the successful candidate will need to live within reasonable travelling distance of Maidstone, Kent so that we can meet and work together regularly.

What You Will Be Working On

The role will primarily involve:

• Developing bespoke web applications from scratch.
• Adding new functionality to existing applications.
• Investigating and resolving bugs and technical issues.
• Building bespoke websites from designs supplied by our designer.
• Working with existing PHP and MySQL applications, including legacy systems.
• Developing and consuming APIs.
• Working with third-party services and integrations.
• Testing your own work carefully before it is released.
• Using Git for source control and deployment workflows.
• Occasionally assisting with WordPress projects where appropriate.
• Supporting the continued development and improvement of existing Probeck products and client systems.

The approximate workload is expected to be:

• 50% bespoke web application development.
• 40% website development.
• 10% mobile application or related development.
• Minimal traditional IT or technical support work.

Core Technical Skills

Candidates should already have a good working knowledge of:

• PHP
• MySQL
• HTML
• CSS
• JavaScript

Depending on experience level, we would also expect an understanding of good development practices, debugging, database design and working within existing codebases.

Useful Additional Experience

Experience in any of the following would be beneficial, although these can also be learnt within the role:

• Git and GitHub
• REST APIs and API development
• Stripe and payment integrations
• Swift/SwiftUI
• Kotlin
• React
• React Native
• Microsoft Azure
• WordPress
• Elementor
• Hosting environments including Linux and IIS
• Working with third-party platforms and services

We are comfortable with developers using modern tools to help understand existing systems, investigate problems and improve productivity, provided that the developer remains responsible for understanding and checking the code they produce.

Working With Existing Systems

Not every project will start from a blank page.

A significant part of the role will involve working with established applications and understanding existing code written over many years. Some older projects may contain limited documentation, so the ability to trace through code, understand how a system works and make safe changes is important.

Newer Probeck applications follow a more structured development approach, and the successful candidate will contribute towards continuing to improve the consistency and maintainability of the codebase.

Working Independently

This is primarily a remote position and therefore requires somebody who is comfortable working independently.

You will be trusted to manage your development work without somebody constantly supervising you. However, independence does not mean guessing.

If you are unsure about something, we expect you to ask.

Being able to say "I don't know" or "I need some guidance with this" is considered a strength. Making an assumption that could damage a live system or introduce unnecessary risk is not.

As experience develops, the aim is for the successful candidate to be able to take a project or feature from requirements through development, testing and delivery with increasing independence.

Attention to Detail

Quality is an important part of how Probeck works.

Development is not considered complete simply because the functionality works. We expect attention to details such as:

• Layout and alignment.
• Responsive behaviour.
• Spelling and wording.
• Form validation.
• Error handling.
• User experience.
• Consistency throughout an application.
• Testing different scenarios and edge cases.
• Ensuring changes do not unintentionally affect existing functionality.

Speed is important, but quality comes first.

Client Contact

This is not a sales or account-management role.

Most communication with clients will initially be handled through the business owner, although developers may occasionally join meetings where hearing requirements directly from a client would be useful.

Over time, developers who are comfortable dealing directly with clients may be given more opportunity to do so.

There is no expectation to generate sales or undertake business development.

Career Development

Initially, the role will focus primarily on web applications and bespoke website development.

The business owner currently retains most mobile application development, although there will be opportunities to gain exposure to them where appropriate.

As the business grows, there is significant opportunity for the successful candidate to take greater ownership of projects and potentially become a senior member of the development team.

The longer-term objective is for an experienced developer to be capable of taking complete projects from initial technical requirements through to finished delivery.

For junior developers, this progression would naturally take longer and would include additional support, mentoring and review.

Pay: £28,000.00-£32,000.00 per year
