We're looking for a Junior Web Developer / Designer to join our development team.

This is a varied role that goes beyond traditional WordPress development. You’ll have the opportunity to work across website design and development, WordPress, internal software and bespoke applications, giving you the chance to develop a broad range of skills as your experience grows.

We’re looking for someone who has a genuine interest in both design and development and who enjoys understanding how things work, solving problems and building things from the ground up.

You don’t need years of commercial experience. We’re much more interested in what you can demonstrate that you can do.

The role

A key part of the role will be designing and developing websites using WordPress. We’re looking for someone who has already designed and built their own websites and understands the process of taking a design from an initial concept through to a fully functioning website.

You’ll work with custom WordPress themes and Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) rather than simply relying on pre-built themes and page builders.

However, WordPress is only part of the role.

As you develop within the company, you’ll also have opportunities to work on and contribute to bespoke software applications.

This could involve developing new functionality, maintaining existing systems, integrating different systems and helping to build new features for software used within the business.

This makes the role particularly suited to someone who wants to progress beyond being a traditional WordPress developer and build experience across websites, applications and software development.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who can demonstrate practical experience building websites and has a good understanding of both front-end development and PHP.

Essential skills

• Experience designing and building your own websites
• Experience developing custom WordPress themes
• Experience using Advanced Custom Fields (ACF)
• PHP
• HTML5
• SCSS
• JavaScript
• jQuery
• React.js
• Good understanding of responsive web development
• Experience using design software such as Figma, Adobe XD, or similar
• An understanding of how to translate a design into a working website
• Good attention to detail and an eye for visual design
• A genuine interest in software and web development

What you’ll be doing

Your day-to-day work will be varied, with the opportunity to work across several areas of development.

Website development

• Designing and developing responsive websites
• Building and maintaining custom WordPress themes
• Creating flexible content structures using ACF
• Converting designs from Figma, Adobe XD or similar into responsive websites
• Writing clean and maintainable PHP, HTML, SCSS and JavaScript
• Working with jQuery and React.js
• Maintaining and improving existing websites
• Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues

Software development

As your skills and experience develop, you’ll also have the opportunity to work on bespoke software.

This may include:

• Developing new functionality and features
• Maintaining and improving existing applications
• Working with PHP and JavaScript-based applications
• Building user interfaces and interactive functionality
• Working with APIs and JSON data
• Integrating different systems and services
• Working with real-time functionality such as SSE
• Helping to identify and resolve bugs
• Contributing ideas for improving internal systems
• Learning how different parts of a larger software system work together

You won't be expected to know everything from day one. You'll have the opportunity to learn, develop your skills and take on more responsibility as your experience grows.

The person we're looking for

You might be a recent graduate, someone coming from a junior web development role, a self-taught developer with a strong portfolio, or someone who has developed their skills through personal projects and freelance work.

What matters most is that you can demonstrate your ability and have the enthusiasm to learn.

We're particularly interested in candidates who have personally designed and developed websites themselves, rather than simply configuring existing WordPress themes.

Your portfolio matters

A portfolio is highly desirable for this role.

Please include examples of websites or applications you've personally worked on.

We're particularly interested in seeing projects where you've:

• Designed the website yourself
• Built a custom WordPress theme
• Used ACF
• Written your own PHP, HTML, SCSS and JavaScript
• Used React or other JavaScript frameworks
• Taken a project from an initial idea or design through to a finished product

Personal projects, university projects and freelance work are all welcome.

We're interested in what you've actually built and your involvement in the project, rather than simply how many years of experience you have.
