Full job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Consultant Neurologist to join our well-established Neurology Directorate at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is an excellent opportunity to work within a regional tertiary neurosciences service, supporting patients across Lancashire and South Cumbria while developing your clinical, teaching, leadership and research interests.

Our Neurology service provides specialist acute and outpatient care for a population of approximately 1.8 million people. You will join a supportive multidisciplinary team of consultant neurologists, neurophysiologists, neuroradiologists, neurorehabilitation consultants, specialist nurses, doctors in training and allied health professionals.

This post offers an attractive balance of outpatient neurology, inpatient input, multidisciplinary working, on-call participation, teaching and service development. We welcome applicants who are committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care and who want to contribute to the ongoing development of neurology services across the region.

The successful candidate will provide consultant-level neurology input across outpatient, inpatient and multidisciplinary settings. Clinical activity will include outpatient clinics at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals and, depending on service need, peripheral hospital sites. The final job plan will be agreed through the consultant job planning process.

Some of the duties will include:
  • Providing high-quality direct clinical care for neurology patients.
  • Contributing to multidisciplinary team working and support coordinated care across hospital and regional pathways.
Participating in the neurology on-call rota, currently operating on a week-on basis.
  • Support inpatient care and investigation through access to beds within the Regional Neuroscience Unit at Royal Preston Hospital.
  • Providing outpatient clinics at Royal Preston Hospital and other sites according to service need.
  • Contributing to audit, clinical governance, service improvement and patient safety activity.
  • Supporting undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including supervision of doctors in training.
  • Maintaining professional development and participate in annual appraisal, revalidation and job planning.
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a major acute and specialist Trust in the North West, providing services from Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley and South Ribble Hospital. The Trust is the regional centre for a range of specialist services, including neurosciences, oncology, renal, vascular, plastics and major trauma.

The Neurosciences Centre at Royal Preston Hospital brings together neurology, neurosurgery, neurophysiology, neuroradiology, neuropathology and neurorehabilitation. The Neurology Directorate serves a broad and diverse population across Lancashire and South Cumbria and provides acute neurology, outpatient care and specialist support across multiple hospital sites.

We are proud of our commitment to education, research, innovation and excellent patient care. Neurosciences research is a priority clinical research theme for the Trust, and the department is actively involved in research and national and international programmes. There are opportunities for the successful candidate to contribute to research, education, leadership and service development.

Our values are centred on being caring and compassionate, recognising individuality, involving people in decisions, working together as one team and taking personal responsibility for delivering high standards of care.
