We are seeking a proactive and skilled Environmental Health Officer. You will carry out site-based and office-based work across the borough, responding to service requests, conducting inspections and investigations, and using a range of interventions—from advice and education to formal enforcement—to secure compliance. This opportunity is ideal for someone confident working independently in the field while contributing positively to a small, focused team.

Key Accountabilities

  • Undertake inspections, surveys, visits and monitoring activities in accordance with legislation, codes of practice and local procedures.

  • Investigate complaints and service requests, gathering evidence and determining proportionate and justifiable actions.

  • Draft and serve statutory notices, fixed penalty notices and other legal documents as required.

  • Prepare clear case files and evidence for legal proceedings, and represent the Council at court or hearings when necessary.

  • Provide practical, accessible advice and guidance to businesses and residents to promote voluntary compliance and behaviour change.

  • Maintain accurate records, data and case management information to required standards.

  • Contribute to team performance targets, service plans and project work while upholding the Council’s values and standards of customer care.

Key Criteria / Requirements

  • Degree in Environmental Health (CIEH accredited or equivalent) or a closely related degree with substantial environmental health content.

  • Strong and current knowledge of environmental health law, risk-based regulation and enforcement tools within an English local authority context.

  • Significant and recent experience in at least one broad area of environmental health practice (e.g. food safety, housing, environmental protection, public health).

  • Proven ability to manage a demanding workload, conduct inspections and investigations, analyse information and identify trends.

  • Experience using a range of interventions including advice, persuasion and appropriate formal enforcement actions.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical matters clearly to diverse audiences.

  • Confident IT user (e.g., databases, browsers, Word, Excel) and evidence of ongoing CPD

Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for work.
