Full job description

Nyetimber is a pioneering luxury brand and multiple award-winning English sparkling wine producer. Our story is one of many firsts; we were the first to pioneer the now-established style of English sparkling wine; we were the first to grow the renowned grape varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier in England exclusively for producing sparkling wine; and the estate where our vines were first planted, was first mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086 by its then Anglo-Saxon name “Nyetimbraha”.

Quality is key to absolutely everything we do at Nyetimber and there is a constant strive for perfection. We produce exceptional sparkling wine, but always keep in mind that the reference to exceptional goes beyond wine, it extends to every touch point of the brand.

We are seeking a passionate and skilled Gardener to join our small, dedicated team. This is a rare chance to nurture and shape the historic gardens at the heart of our private Sussex estate. Set within a 13-acre valley with views of the South Downs, our gardens are a blend of classic elegance and contemporary design.

Following an extensive redesign, the landscape features terraced herbaceous borders, mature specimen trees, spring-fed ponds, wildflower meadows, formal rose gardens, and intricate cloud-pruned topiary. The estate also includes a productive kitchen garden, orchard, and apiary, all managed sensitively for nature.

The Role:

Reporting to the Senior Gardener, you will play a key role in the day-to-day care and long-term development of this diverse environment. You will take pride in maintaining the highest horticultural standards, from precise lawn mowing and intricate pruning to proactive planting and seasonal projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Executing all aspects of garden maintenance: planting, weeding, mulching, and pruning (including the care of Box and Yew topiary).
  • Mowing and maintaining formal lawns using pedestrian and ride-on mowers.
  • Safely operating a range of garden machinery (strimmers, hedge cutters, blowers).
  • Assisting with the care of the kitchen garden, cut flower beds, and orchard.
  • Caring for water features and contributing to the overall health of the garden’s ecosystem.
  • Helping prepare the estate for private events and visits, ensuring it is presented impeccably.

Who We Are Looking For:

You are a knowledgeable, practical, and positive horticulturist who finds joy in both the detail and the broader canvas of garden management.

Essential Requirements:

  • At least 2-3 years’ experience in a horticulturally diverse garden.
  • RHS Level 2 qualification or equivalent proven knowledge.
  • Strong plant identification skills and a keen desire to learn more.
  • Proven competence in using garden machinery with a steadfast commitment to health and safety.
  • Excellent physical fitness, able to work in all weather conditions. It is important to note that the garden does not have indoor areas for poor weather, and most of the beds are on slopes.
  • A team player with initiative, great communication skills, and a diplomatic approach.
  • A full, clean driving licence and your own transport (the estate is rural).

Desirable Attributes:

  • Experience in a private estate or heritage garden setting.
  • Relevant certificates: PA1/PA6 (spraying), CS30/CS31 (chainsaw).
  • Skills in topiary, water gardening, or basic floristry.

The Nyetimber Experience:

  • Be a part of the world renowned English sparkling wine and multi award winning wine producer.
  • Work for a true British heritage brand
  • Excellent development, growth, and progression opportunities
  • 25 days annual leave + bank holidays
  • Generous staff purchasing privileges.
  • 5% Pension
  • Life Assurance
  • Simply Health Cash plan
  • Perkbox
