Job details
Full job description
Kanesbury Care operates six care homes across Poole and Bournemouth.
We are looking for an experienced and practical Maintenance Person to join our team. This is a hands on role responsible for keeping our care homes safe, well maintained and presented to a good standard.
You will carry out general repairs and maintenance yourself, while also managing routine safety checks, maintenance records and contractors where specialist work is required.
The role is 40 hours per week and will include some weekend working and occasional emergency cover.
What you will be doing
- Carry out day to day repairs and general maintenance across the care home
- Complete basic plumbing, carpentry, decorating and general building repairs within your level of competence
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance
- Respond to maintenance requests from the Home Manager and other departments
- Prioritise urgent repairs and complete jobs with minimum disruption to residents
- Paint and decorate bedrooms and communal areas as required
- Carry out regular inspections of the building, equipment and external areas
- Check boilers, plant rooms and associated equipment and report any faults
- Liaise with approved external contractors where work requires specialist skills or certification
- Monitor contractors attending site and confirm work has been completed satisfactorily
- Assist with refurbishment projects and improvement works
Compliance and record keeping
This is not purely a handyman position. You will also be responsible for completing and maintaining maintenance and compliance records.
Duties will include:
- Weekly fire alarm testing
- Emergency lighting checks
- Fire extinguisher and fire safety checks
- Water temperature monitoring and recording
- Routine checks of fire doors, window restrictors and other safety equipment
- Maintaining maintenance logs and recording completed work
- Reporting hazards, accidents, near misses and building defects
- Following Health and Safety, COSHH, Fire Safety and company procedures
Full training will be provided for our systems and procedures.
About you
We are looking for someone who is practical, organised and comfortable working independently.
You should have:
- Previous experience in property, building or facilities maintenance
- Good general DIY and repair skills
- Experience of painting and decorating
- Basic plumbing and carpentry skills
- The ability to identify faults and decide when a specialist contractor is required
- Good organisation and time management
- The ability to complete maintenance records accurately
- Basic computer skills
- A practical approach to problem solving
- Good communication skills when dealing with residents, colleagues and contractors
Experience working within a care home, hotel, school, hospital or another regulated environment would be useful but is not essential.
A plumbing, electrical, building or maintenance qualification would also be useful but is not essential.
Working hours
40 hours per week.
The normal working pattern will primarily be during the week, although the role includes some weekend working and occasional emergency or out of hours cover.
Other requirements
A full UK driving licence is desirable due to the nature of the role and the potential requirement to support other Kanesbury Care homes.
The successful applicant will be required to complete an enhanced DBS check and provide satisfactory references.
Our maintenance team plays an important part in keeping our homes safe, comfortable and well presented for our residents, their families and our staff.
