Salary: £25,268 pa (£12.46 ph)

Primary purpose:

To support the day-to-day care, maintenance and presentation of garden rose trials across our container and field sites. This practical role is essential in helping to ensure that all plants within the trials programmes are healthy, well-presented, and maintained to a consistently high standard. The role involves carrying out a wide range of horticultural tasks with precision and consistency as part of a small trials maintenance team.

Although we are making strides to reduce the requirement for working additional hours during the growing season, this role may require working weekends and some bank holidays. Overtime/ time off in lieu will be given.

Your day to day:

· Carry out general plant husbandry tasks including watering, weeding, feeding, pruning, deadheading, tying in, mowing, strimming, matting and general husbandry. This can involve the use of plant, such as tractors and telehandlers.

· Assist with planting, transplanting, spacing, and labelling of trial plants according to schedules.

· Monitor and report any signs of pests, diseases, or plant stress.

· Help to keep trial areas clean, tidy, and well-organised at all times.

· Support the accurate identification and maintenance of trial layouts and signage.

· Use tools and equipment safely and appropriately to complete maintenance tasks.

· Work closely with the Trials Maintenance Team Leader and other team members to ensure daily priorities are met.

· Maintain a high standard of care and presentation across all trial areas.

· Follow all relevant health, safety, and hygiene protocols

Assist with any other required work to deliver the breeding and trialling programmes

What you bring to the team:

· Experience in a horticultural, nursery, or outdoor working environment (desirable but not essential).

· A keen interest in plants, gardening, or rose growing.

· Willingness to learn and follow instructions with accuracy and consistency.

· Good attention to detail and pride in doing a job well.

· Physical ability to perform hands-on plant care tasks, including lifting, bending, and prolonged standing (reasonable adjustments will be considered in line with the Equality Act 2010). This role includes working outdoors in variably weather conditions.

· Team player with a positive, flexible attitude.

· Basic understanding of plant care and maintenance tasks (training will be provided).

· Reliable, punctual, and able to work to daily and seasonal routines.

· Full UK driving licence (essential)

· Tractor/telehandler licence desirable, but not essential. Training can be provided

· PA1/PA6 spraying certification desirable but not essential. Training can be provided

Working Conditions:

· Full-time role (39 hours a week), with the core shifts on Monday to Friday, working 8:00am to 4:30am, except for Friday’s finishing at 3:30pm. This includes 30 minutes per day unpaid break and 30 minutes per day paid break.

· Site-based role across nursery trial locations.

· Seasonal work patterns based on growing cycle and weather, and physical tasks including lifting, bending, and outdoor working.

· Significant outdoor working in all seasons, with manual handling and physical tasks.

· Some weekend or evening work may be required at peak times.
