Full job description
Consultant in Vascular & Endovascular Surgery
The Liverpool Vascular & Endovascular Service (LiVES) is looking for a Consultant Vascular & Endovascular surgeon to join their growing team that delivers services across the region.
The successful applicant will be based at Aintree University Hospital, one of the Trust’s key sites, and will become an integral member of the Vascular Surgery department. The department is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care, and the post holder will play an active role in the ongoing development of clinical services, education, research, and service improvement initiatives.
Applicants must hold Membership or Fellowship of one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (UK), or equivalent qualification, and be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), possess a current licence to practice, and be listed on the GMC Specialist Register for Vascular Surgery, or be eligible for inclusion within six months of the interview date.
The post holder will be a key member of the multidisciplinary team including vascular surgeons, anaesthetists, resident doctors, therapists and specialist nurses. Appropriate infrastructure is provided including dedicated office space. Contribution to formalised MDT meetings as well as involvement in morbidity and mortality meetings and governance structures is compulsory.
Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust comprises Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital & Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
We are part of NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, formed on 1 Nov 2024 from the coming together of LUHFT and Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust. The Group was born from a shared aim to improve the care we provide our patients.
UHLG is one of the largest employers in the region, with over 16,800 colleagues dedicated to caring for our communities - from birth and beyond.
For the 630,000 people across Merseyside, we are their local NHS. We provide general and emergency hospital care, alongside highly specialised regional services for more than two million people in the North West.
Aintree University Hospital is the single receiving site for adult major trauma patients in Cheshire and Merseyside and hosts a number of regional services including an award-winning stroke facility. Broadgreen Hospital is home to elective surgical, diagnostic and treatment services, together with specialist patient rehabilitation. Liverpool Women’s Hospital specialises in the health of women and babies, delivering over 7,200 babies in the UK’s largest single site maternity hospital each year. The Royal Liverpool University Hospital is the largest hospital in the country to provide inpatients with 100% single bedrooms and focuses on complex planned care and specialist services.

The Directorate of Vascular Surgery currently comprises 15 surgeons working flexibly to support the network. With this and additional appointments the number will raise to 18. Each consultant has an elective job plan which involves sessions at one of our network sites, in addition to sessions at the Aintree site Hub. A total of 16 Consultants will contribute to the acute/on-call work and they participate in complementary “C1” and “C2” rotas during which they are free of any elective commitments.
Friday afternoon is set aside as a Directorate session which begins with the forthcoming weekly plan at 1.30 and a review of all inpatients and patients requiring urgent surgery. The rest of the afternoon consists of a rolling programme of audit, teaching, clinical governance, directorate meetings, research presentations and invited guest lectures.
The successful applicant will become part of the Peripheral/General vascular team with a total of 10 Consultants contributing. They will undertake work at both Aintree University Hospital and one of the network spoke sites. They will participate in the daytime C1 rota at Aintree. Applicants with a special interest in the management of peripheral arterial disease including endovascular, open and hybrid surgery are particularly encouraged to apply with scope to be involved in the specialist lower limb team, who contribute to dedicated Chronic Limb Threatening Ischaemia (CLTI) clinics, inpatient management of CLTI and deliver dedicated endovascular operating lists in the peripheral hybrid operating theatre. Additional specialist interests particularly in deep venous intervention or thoracic outlet syndrome would be strongly supported with surgeons joining dedicated teams within the unit further stimulating subspecialisation. General vascular surgeons with a broad interest will also find the breadth and complexity of work within LiVES stimulating fulfilling.
