THE ROLE

At Caledonian Sleeper, we have an exciting opportunity for a Shunter to join the Operations Team in Edinburgh on a 18-month Fixed Term Contract.

Reporting to the Operations Team Manager, you will support the operations business ensuring its smooth and successful delivery. In this safety critical role as a Shunter, you will be responsible for ensuring the day-day operations that support the safe, continual and efficient provision and operation of the Caledonian Sleeper service, delivering in a safe and secure environment to ensure the safe management of train movements.  

You will work as part of an effective team to deliver excellent standard of service and where required, develop immediate solutions to problems encountered within the operation.  

We are looking for a team player, with the ability to have a collaborative approach with many stakeholders, whilst able and keen to manage and deliver guest related activities.  

Main Accountabilities: 

· Proactive communication and safety: Communicate proactively and effectively with GB Railfreight control, other staff and customer representatives to support customer service, operational efficiency and safety.

· Training and mentoring: Attend/complete all safety briefs, online training and role-related training; may act as a mentor on route and rolling stock training as required.

· Continuous improvement feedback: Proactively offer feedback on operational standards and procedures to strive for continual improvement.

· Technology adoption: Embrace and effectively use available technology and equipment, with training, to support successful operation and guest experience.

· Uniform and appearance: Wear and maintain the Caledonian Sleeper uniform to Service Guidelines standards.

· Team briefing and pre-departure readiness: Work with Lead Shunters to ensure team briefings are completed and that all business briefs are read and understood pre-departure.

· Performance reviews and objectives: Collaborate with Line Managers to implement regular reviews to meet business objectives, including Operational Performance and Overall Guest Satisfaction.

What you’ll need to do the role: 

· Excellent communication skills 

· Ability to retain large volumes of information in relation to shunting activities 

· Collaborative team working experience
