15 Firefighter Interview Questions and Answers

Why did you become a firefighter?

Firefighting is physically demanding and requires emotional stability. Ask this question to determine how the candidate made their decision to work in such a high-pressure work environment. What to look for in an answer:

  • Dedication to save lives
  • Explicit interest in a firefighting career
  • Commitment to teamwork, service, and loyalty

Example:

"I like the meaningful purpose of firefighting and helping to keep the community safe. I first got interested in firefighting at a very young age when the house of a nearby schoolmate caught fire. I remember those who got out, those who were rescued, and feeling so helpless. The second experience was a terrible roadside accident and I saw firsthand how brave and qualified the first responders were and how much I admired and appreciated them."

What training and education do you have for the profession and this position?

There is a wide variety of service and education programmes available to firefighters. You'll want to determine what training and education requirements your candidate has. What to look for in an answer:

  • Relevant experience
  • Required education
  • Participation in activities demonstrating a commitment to public service

Example:

"I have a valid Standard First Aid Certificate, CPR Level HCP, and a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. I am a trained EMR and have worked as a part-time firefighter for the past five years. I have an unrestricted "G" driver's licence but understand you may require a class "D" licence which I am willing to pursue. From your website, you prefer your firefighters to have a specialised trade. Mine is in HAZMAT."

What are a firefighter's responsibilities?

The candidate should be able to answer this question quickly and confidently. You'll want to know that they have a full understanding of the job. What to look for in an answer:

  • Saving lives
  • Responding to emergencies
  • Limit the extent of damage from a fire

Example:

"The key responsibility is to save lives and protect property. But, there's also a social responsibility that gives me a moral sense of victory. For instance, escorting the rescued to a place of safety and assuring that medics are on their way. Other duties include calming down frighted and injured people and limiting property damage."

Describe a time you and the team had to resolve a problem. What was the problem and how was it resolved?

The candidate should answer each part of the question. You'll want to test their problem-solving and teamwork skills since firefighters work in such close quarters for long periods at a time. What to look for in an answer:

  • Problem-solving skills
  • Teamwork
  • Collabouration

Example:

"I was involved with an eight-team panel to design a safety training obstacle course for teens. The obstacle course was stopped because of the weather. We developed an alternative plan which was a question-and-answer session and a fire ground simulation. We explained that this was an example of how things don't always go as planned and to be ready with an alternate plan."

At this firehouse, firefighters have four days on then four days off as a continuous schedule. Tell me how you and your family will manage such a non-traditional work schedule.

The candidate should give an answer that shows that they have already discussed this with their family and friends and have a strategy for managing such an irregular work schedule. What to look for in an answer:

  • Verification that they have thought out the responsibilities of a non-traditional work schedule
  • Support of friends and family
  • Show of confidence that they are prepared to work 56 hours a week in a dormitory-like environment

Example:

"I've discussed the irregular work schedule with my friends and family who are supportive of my career. We have devised a strategy where friends will help my family with issues that come up while I'm on duty. They also accept that I can be called away anytime for emergencies."

When there isn't an emergency, what are a firefighter's daily responsibilities?

Non-emergency situations don't mean the work stops. Asking this question will determine what the candidate thinks the daily duties are in the firehouse. What to look for in an answer:

  • Knowledge of non-emergency duties
  • Honesty about skills and abilities
  • Embrace daily challenges and duties

Example:

"Our jobs include cleaning the firehouse, maintaining equipment, and preplanning exercises. We have a daily schedule that includes strength-building exercises, inspecting construction sites, and community and education duties. Also, learning a trade such as a plumber or an electrician. We have ongoing classes in the firehouse to improve this training as well as build our core duties."

After the flames are extinguished, why do we perform a second search of a fire scene?

As a standard protocol, a firefighter is aware of making smart decisions in an emergency. The candidate should explain the reason for a second search and following procedures for your understanding of their knowledge of situational risks. What to look for in an answer:

  • Commitment to protocol, ensuring no one was left inside the burning structure
  • Identifying additional risk within the structure
  • Identify the start of the fire

Example:

"A secondary search ensures that everyone had been extracted during the fire and to identify and eliminate any remaining hazards. In addition to ensuring there are no areas left that could reignite, firefighters also identify where the fire started."

What do you see as future technology for firefighters?

The development of new and smarter ways to fight fires and protect firefighters is ongoing. The candidate must be aware of how fires will be fought in the future and understand recent improvements. What to look for in an answer:

  • Methods used today that improve firefighting
  • Awareness of future technology
  • Commitment to learning

Example:

"I see improvements being made to today's thermal imaging cameras, drones for overhead sky viewpoints, and three-dimensional map projections. I believe there will be an unmanned aerial system at every emergency response detachment. The emergence of aerial firefighting solutions for use in high-rise or wildfires is being developed. Also, powered exoskeleton firefighter suits, water jetpacks, sonic fire extinguishers, robots, and electric wave blasters."

If you suspect a co-worker of drinking on duty what would you do?

This question is designed to get to the core of the candidate's beliefs in team building, work environment safety, and handling conflict with a co-worker. What to look for in an answer:

  • Firehouse safety
  • Adherence to protocol
  • Handling a difficult situation with a co-worker

Example:

"I would confront the colleague and remind them of what we have learned about drinking alcohol in the firehouse, and how it impairs the safety of all of us and the community. I would allow him to report his behaviour to the fire chief but if he doesn't follow through, I would report them to prevent incidents and infraction of the rules."

What do you think is the biggest issue facing fire services?

There are numerous challenges that fire services face. A well-thought-out response from the candidate gives you insight into their interest in the field and their understanding of these challenges. What to look for in an answer:

  • Outline of challenges facing firefighters
  • Understanding of critical issues
  • Approach problem-solving as a solutions-oriented team member

Example:

"Based on today's political and economic landscape I think funding is one of the major issues facing today's fire fighting industry. The problem of retention of staff is a major issue across Canada. The economic impact is also felt by volunteer firefighters which are widely used across the country. It means less training and less equipment. There's also a need to improve firefighter health issues."

Do you have any suggestions to improve our fire prevention and public education programmes?

Public education is critical for fire prevention and safety. The candidate should answer this question with their beliefs in a firefighter's responsibility and desire to make a positive contribution to the community. What to look for in an answer:

  • Interest in fire prevention and public education
  • Awareness of community, business, and residential programmes
  • Willingness to attend shows and demonstrations for the public

Example:

"Fairs and home shows are great venues for educating the public with booths, videos, and printed material. If feasible, include a safety house trailer especially to teach how to cope with fires and door-to-door campaigns to check fire alarms and spread information about fire safety. Implement community educational outreach programmes to schools, business and resident associations."

Are there any situations where you would disobey a direct order? If so, when and why?

Training procedures and following orders can mean the difference between life and death. This question is designed to give you insight into the candidate's preparedness to immediately take direction without question. What to look for in an answer:

  • Honesty and ethics to speak against illegal or unethical activities
  • Trusting direction from leadership
  • Critical thinking

Example:

"I would disobey an order if it was clear that the action would put someone's life at risk. If the person giving the order couldn't see or wasn't aware of the situation, I would have to depend on my critical thinking skills and assess a course of action. I would not follow an order to perform an illegal or unethical task."

How would you deal with an angry citizen on the fire ground?

Citizens and bystanders can become emotionally charged during an emergency. It's important that the candidate effectively deals with these people, calmly while keeping everyone safe. What to look for in an answer:

  • Problem-solving
  • Quick thinking
  • Safety of bystanders

Example:

"My priority is the safety of all those around the fire ground, so I would get an angry citizen away from the area to a safe place while assuring them that everything is being taken care of. I once had a citizen complain that the fire truck was blocking other traffic and I calmly explained that someone will move it as soon as possible after everyone in the structure has been pulled to safety."

What do you think are the most important qualities for a firefighter?

A good firefighter possesses many valuable qualities, for instance, integrity, problem-solving abilities, and dedication. What you'll want to know is what qualities the candidate values and how they prioritise them. What to look for in an answer:

  • Dedication
  • Problem-solving
  • Physical fitness

Example:

"One of the most important qualities is the dedication to supporting the team followed by staying physically fit, serving the community, and solving problems. Just these few rely on the firefighter's ability to communicate, decision-making skills, courage, and passion."

Why should we hire you out of all the other candidates?

While staff retention is an issue within the fire industry, the jobs are often competitive. The candidate should reiterate some of their qualifications and tell why they are unique. What to look for in an answer:

  • Experience
  • Value to the team
  • Responsibility

Example:

"I have been a firefighter for six years, I can react quickly in emergencies, and can deal with the responsibility of leadership. I continually educate myself on non-standard systems used for first responders, am a team player, and have an analytical mind."
