Regarding the position of Regional Manager, what experience do you have? 

This question allows you to assess whether the candidate has the confidence to manage a team. It also queries their experience in management and how it has prepared them for the current position. As they answer, candidates should: 

  • Talk about past instances where they used their management skills
  • Detail how they advanced their career or received various forms of accreditation
  • Speak with pride as they give their answer

 'I have many skills and qualifications that make me an excellent Regional Manager. I've worked with several banks and sales companies, and managed several departments and employees. Since I'm self-driven and have strong decision-making skills, employees tend to perform well under my guidance.'

What will be your management style should you get the job of Regional Manager?

This question allows you to find out whether the candidate can be an effective manager, depending on the style of management they opt for. The situational style is often effective as it is highly flexible and fits a wide variety of situations. When answering, the candidate should: 

  • Pick a management style that allows them to adapt to different scenarios
  • Show how their management style fits changing services, products and quotas  
  • Show that they will learn and grow

This question seeks to find out whether the candidate has great organisational and overall managerial skills that allow them to run a business without being physically present at each location. They should answer the question by: 

  • Showing the strategies that they will use to ensure they meet business goals
  • Demonstrating how they can work efficiently under pressure
  • Explaining how they work with Junior Managers

Example:

"I will need them to run their own daily operations as I cannot possibly be physically present at each location every day. I will lend my support to their work and let them know I will come to them should there be a problem that requires my attention."

How would you handle a problem where the manager under you is underperforming? 

Candidates should avoid shifting all the blame onto underperforming employees as they answer, and acknowledge if they had any role to play in their poor performance. As the candidate answers, check for: 

  • A situation they had in the past 
  • How they approached the problem
  • Results and confidence in their speech

Example:

 'I take responsibility for my employees' performance. One significant challenge I faced was a Store Manager who was unable to meet his sales targets. After a scheduled meeting with him, I understood that his store was understaffed and incapable of handling many customers. This led to fatigue and hence reduced performance. I arranged for two Sales Reps to be transferred to his store, after which his total sales improved and even exceeded the set targets."

As Regional Manager, what skills and qualifications will you check when hiring new Store Managers and Sales Representatives?

This question allows you to assess if a candidate can hire an effective team that will ensure further success once they get the managerial job. Check for the following in the candidate's responses:

This question seeks to assess whether the candidate can gather essential information, research and operate within certain geographical boundaries. When answering this question, the candidate must:

  • Offer examples of market research methods
  • Display that they have strong reasoning capabilities
  • Focus and talk about goals 

Example:

"Before entering a new territory, I would use focus groups and surveys to understand how competitors work in the area. I would then establish whether there is a unique need that our business could fill and how we will differentiate ourselves from already established businesses."

What do you think is the most challenging thing about the managerial job we are offering?

This question seeks to assess the candidate's self-awareness and whether they have done sufficient research on the position. When answering, the candidate must:

  • Talk about specific activities that make it hard to manage employees
  • Talk about how they embrace challenges 
  • Discuss how they turn challenges into opportunities for growth

"I consider managing senior employees with other teams below them one of the biggest challenges of being a Regional Manager. I also think that it is the most rewarding part of the job, since you can accomplish a lot if you scale up and grow your employees to meet your performance expectations.
