10 Production Operative Interview Questions and Answers

Why do you want to work as a Production Operative?

An ideal Production Operator should have experience and knowledge of working in a similar position. They should have the right attitude towards the job and have other reasons for wanting the job other than money. What to look for in an answer:

  • The right attitude towards the job
  • Knowledge and experience
  • A clear vision for their role as a Production Operative

Example:

"I've always been a technician at heart and I enjoy working with machines. What's more, I see a bright future in the field and I'm ready to take up more roles as a Production Operative. I'm attentive to detail and can handle the pressure that comes with the job."

Why do you think you will do well at this job?

You should ask this question to see if the applicant knows what the job entails and if they have the skills to perform the job. They should be able to work under pressure, be attentive to details and know how to work with a limited budget and time. What to look for in an answer:

  • Knowledge of what the role entails
  • Attention to detail
  • Confidence in their ability

Example:

"In my previous job, I worked as a Process Operator and I learnt how to work with limited resources and still meet production goals. In that position, I learnt to be attentive to details and to work with my colleagues as a team to achieve the set goals. I believe I can do much better in this position using my experience and skills."

In your role, you will work with different machines. If several machines break down simultaneously, what action would you take?

One of the roles of a Production Operative is to oversee machinery. With this question, you can test the potential hire's ability to identify and solve problems. You can check to see if they're quick to act when problems arise and if they're responsible enough to do due diligence on why the machines are failing.

  • Ability to prioritise tasks
  • Sense of Responsibility
  • General knowledge of machine maintenance

Example:

"If several machines break down, I'd first focus on repairing the machine that's most crucial for that day's operations. Once production gets done, I'd check all the machines to see why they are failing. After identifying the issue, I'd repair them starting with the ones that achieve the highest output."

How do you ensure that all machines are safe to operate?

Production Operatives are responsible for performing quality checks on equipment before use. Failure to check on the safety of a machine can result in accidents and production failures. You can ask this question to gauge if the potential candidate knows safety guidelines and procedures. What to look for in an answer:

  • Knowledge of safety procedures and guidelines
  • Ability to perform quality checks
  • Understanding of your company's quality control guidelines

Example:

"In my previous roles, I worked with several machines and I understand how most of them are supposed to perform. I've also had various training sessions on quality control and machine maintenance. I'm confident that I can identify and replace any faulty equipment to ensure that all devices are in good working condition."

What would you do if you realise that one of your colleagues is always taking breaks and giving excuses not to work?

Candidates may need to deal with colleagues that aren't doing their part. An ideal Production Operative should be able to deal with colleagues of all levels and not tolerate misconduct. What to look for in an answer:

  • Willingness to resolve conflicts
  • Ability to talk and motivate colleagues
  • Confidence and willingness to report any misconduct of colleagues

Example:

"If I realise that my colleague is always skipping work and giving excuses not to work, I'd talk to them to understand their issue. If it's mere irresponsibility and laziness, I'd ask them to get back to work, and if they didn't, I'd report the misconduct to my superiors."

How do you ensure that the production process is efficient and uninterrupted?

You can ask the potential hire this question to gauge their understanding of the manufacturing process. A Process Operator should know what impacts production and how to ensure everything works smoothly. What to look for in an answer:

  • Understanding of the manufacturing process
  • Ability to work as a team
  • Management skills

Example:

"For production to run efficiently, I have to ensure that all employees in the manufacturing department are motivated and trained to perform their tasks. I have to ensure that the machines are maintained regularly. Also, supplies needed for the manufacturing process have to be in stock for production to be efficient. I'll ensure that I put all these factors into consideration every day before production begins."

How do you ensure that you keep track of production and inventory operations?

An ideal candidate should have basic computer skills to maintain and track production inventory. You can ask the applicants to give you an example of software they have used in the past. What to look for in an answer:

  • Willingness to learn
  • Organisation skills
  • Experience using different software

Example:

"For production and manufacturing to be efficient, I have to keep track of inventory to ensure stock gets used responsibly. I've used QuickBooks and ERP in my previous jobs to track production and inventory operations. I'm willing to learn whichever software you use to ensure all my stocks are up to date and in good condition."

How would you react if your workload gets increased?

As the business grows, so does production. Ask this question to get some insight into how the potential candidate approaches and handles difficult situations. What to look for in an answer:

  • Ability to prioritise tasks
  • Ability to handle difficult situations
  • Decision-making skills

Example:

"Based on my experience, I've learnt that the best way to handle increased workload is to step back and prioritise tasks at hand. In most cases, some tasks are urgent and some are not. I'd take time to evaluate the workload then work on each of them, starting from the most critical."

How would you handle conflicts among your colleagues?

For most production work to be completed effectively, all employees have to work as a team. However, conflicts do arise from time to time, and it's the goal of a Process Operator to ensure all things run smoothly. What to look for in an answer:

  • Ability to solve conflicts
  • Negotiation and communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills

Example:

"In case of a conflict between two of my colleagues, I'd take time to talk and listen to them individually. I'd make sure that they understand the importance of teamwork and how important it is to complete the job at hand."

What do you do if you are not able to maintain and repair specific production equipment?

The work of a Process Operator is to oversee machinery and perform essential maintenance and repairs on production equipment. However, they may not have the technical engineering skills to handle complex machine failures. This question helps you to see if the candidate is willing to seek help. What to look for in an answer:

  • Ability to seek help
  • Commitment to quality work, even if it means seeking help
  • Ability to work in a team

Example:

"If I'm not able to diagnose or solve a certain issue, I'd inform my supervisor of the situation and request expert assistance. Once the expert arrives, I'd help them in any way possible for them to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."
