What does a Beautician do?
Beauticians provide a range of beauty services that include body scrubs, tanning treatments, hair removal, face masks and anti-stress massages. They perform skin analysis and advise customers about their skin, hair and body. They also perform facials, waxing and aromatherapy treatments. Sometimes, a Beautician recommends patients to medical practitioners such as plastic surgeons, physiotherapists and dermatologists.
Beauticians also up-sell and cross-sell various beauty services and products to walk-in customers. Their working hours vary depending on the requirements of the salon or beauty Centrex in which they work. Larger salons operate two or three shifts that cover evenings and the weekend.
Beautician skills and qualifications
Beauticians have to be being pleasant, tactful and sensitive to customers looking for body and facial treatments. They must also be familiar with skincare therapies such as peeling, exfoliation and moisturisation. A successful Beautician candidate will also have various prerequisite skills and qualifications that typically include:
- Working knowledge of beauty, wellness and cosmetic products
- Ability to assess and identify skin imperfections
- Ability to perform waxing, pedicure, manicures and nail reconstruction
- Ability to offer personalised beauty services
- Knowledge of make-up application and relaxing massage techniques
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Good hand-eye coordination
- Professional appearance and a positive attitude
Beautician experience requirements
A Beautician needs at least six months of experience as a Cosmetologist, Hair Stylist or a Beauty Therapist. Ideal candidates also have experience with beauty treatments. Some customers request a massage, which is why this person needs to know how to perform various types of massages. Most Beauticians start as Hair Styling Assistants shampooing customers’ hair and cleaning the salon ready for the next day. Employers hiring for specialist roles like Hair Stylist or Aesthetician, expect at least three to five years of experience from potential candidates.
Beautician education and training requirements
Ideally, a Beautician undergoes professional training in cosmetology, beauty therapy or a related field before they can provide personal care or beauty services. While no formal education is necessary for this role, the applicant must have professional training in skin, hair, nails, makeup and beauty treatments. Consider applicants with a Level 2 & 3 Massage or Beauty Therapy Qualification. Formal training in cosmetology, beauty therapy or a related field is also a plus.
