A Production Manager, also known as Plant Manager, is responsible for all the manufacturing-related activities in a factory. What does a Production Manager do?

Production Managers oversee all the aspects of manufacturing or production from design concept through production and delivery while overseeing quality within sampling and actual manufacturing. They also establish, manage and lead production teams to create products in line with the company’s environment, health and safety standards while complying with all external regulations. Production Managers are also in charge of the resources that go into the manufactured products. Working from a factory, they ensure delivery and productivity targets are met. They often work with engineering, supply, and sales teams.

Production Manager skills and qualifications

A successful Production Manager candidate will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications, that include:

  • Basic understanding of patterns and grading
  • Knowledge of retail maths and the ability to calculate wholesale costs, resource requirements planning (RRP) and margins
  • Excellent understanding of lean manufacturing
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel to support work-in-progress and production schedules
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of material requirements planning (MRP) systems
  • Ability to operate all manufacturing or production line equipment

Production Manager experience requirements

The ideal candidate is someone with at least five years of plant management or operations experience working in a multi-line factory. A firm grasp of manufacturing-related activities, specifically production cost control, safety and quality, is a must. A person in this role also needs to have experience with lean manufacturing, process flow and continuous improvement tools and methodologies.

Applicants with a background or experience in similar positions such as a Manufacturing Manager or Production Supervisor is highly desirable. Demonstrable leadership experience, good financial understanding and people management skills are also extremely important for this role.

Production Manager education and training requirements

A bachelor’s degree in production, manufacturing, materials science and engineering or a related field is essential for this role. Technical and production-based certifications are also helpful. Ideally, the candidate has a Certificate in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) or Level 3 or Level 5 Certificate in Operations Management. Starting as Production Supervisors, many Production Managers gain the experience to oversee manufacturing activities through on-the-job training.
