A Programme Coordinator manages a residential care home, which is a living space where residents need extra support and care in completing everyday activities. Most residents are elderly and may need help with eating, dressing, washing or taking medication. The Programme Coordinator makes sure staff are equipped to handle all these situations while fostering a safe and comfortable environment.

Programme Coordinators are also responsible for administrative and financial tasks needed to run a care home such as payroll, training of new staff and event planning such as finding acceptable and safe outings for their residents.

Programme Coordinator skills and qualifications

Programme Coordinators are able to remain calm during stressful situations while soothing residents down and assuring their safety. A successful Programme Coordinator will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications that include:

Programme Coordinator experience requirements

Candidates must have previous experience working as an Assistant Programme Coordinator or as a staff member in a residential care home. Dedicated applicants will have also completed a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services which takes around two to three years to complete. The applicant may then have specialised in one of these areas: management of adult service, management of adult residential services, practice in adult services, management of children and young people’s services, management of children and young people’s residential services or practices in children and young people’s services.

Programme Coordinator education and training requirements

Applicants must have a foundational degree, higher national diploma or degree in a subject like health and social care management before applying for a graduate trainee scheme. After this, they will usually complete a higher apprenticeship regarding the care of young people or adult care. Applicants must also have a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Health and Social Care as well as social work qualification and registration.
