A Paediatrician is a medical professional who specialises in providing medical care to younger patients, from birth until they reach adulthood. Their main duty is to diagnose and treat diseases that usually affect children, babies, infants, young adults and adolescents and to help their young patients maintain good health.

Paediatrician skills and qualifications

A successful Paediatrician candidate will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications to perform their duties effectively. These include:

Paediatrician experience requirements

A Paediatrician candidate must have proven work experience in paediatric medicine to qualify for employment. Many healthcare facilities require candidates to have at least two years of clinical experience. Some medical facilities require additional experience in specific specialisms, such as nutrition or rehabilitative therapy. Senior-level Paediatrician roles may require up to 10 years of experience in both medical and managerial positions. In some cases, Paediatrician candidates may also need to have teaching and training experience. Many employers prefer candidates who have voluntary work experience in the NHS, social services and charitable organisations.

Paediatrician education and training requirements

Most employers require Paediatricians to complete a five-year medicine degree programme accredited by the General Medical Council and a two-year foundation course of general training. Depending on the specialism, employers may require candidates to complete up to four to seven years of specialist training. Most employers also need Paediatricians to be members of the General Medical Council. Some employers also require candidates to join the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health to qualify for employment.
