What does a Travel Agent do?

A Travel Agent handles and coordinates domestic and international travel. They often advise clients on spending based on their needs or preferences. They also make car reservations and provide information on customs, local weather and all the necessary required travel documents. If changes arise before or during a trip, they also make alternative bookings.

Sometimes, Travel Agents visit popular destinations or resorts to have firsthand experience that they can share with clients. They evaluate them for comfort levels, cleanliness and amenities. However, they’ll spend most of their time talking with clients and promoting various tours.

Travel Agent skills and qualifications

Travel Agent positions usually only need entry-level requirements. Applicants need to be at least 18 years old and eligible to work in the UK. A successful Travel Agent candidate will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications that typically include:

  • Computer literacy in Excel and Word
  • Management of global distribution software (GDS), which includes Galileo and Amadeus
  • Administrative competencies such as those of a Receptionist
  • Content marketing through the role of a Travel Blogger
  • Familiarity with Sabre and GDS, a plus
  • Knowledge of the travel industry and local suppliers
  • Experience with customer support systems like Zendesk or Freshdesk

Travel Agent experience requirements

Most travel agencies require applicants to have some experience in either corporate travel or travel-related business. Experience in the hospitality industry is acceptable for entry-level positions. Personal travel experience is a plus. The ideal applicant should be eager on selling both local and international itineraries and has the ability to work remotely with their clients. Travel planning experience is strongly preferred by most employers. Understanding of regional and international travel requirements and visas are a big plus .

Travel Agent education and training requirements

Travel Agents should have at least the minimum education requirements General Certificates of Secondary Education (GCSEs) at grades 9 to 4 or its equivalent. A level 3 course or Level 1/2 Certificate/Diploma in Travel and Tourism are other significant qualifications. Corporate roles that involve planning and coordination for high-level executives may require at least a bachelor’s degree. A strong candidate is someone with a strong background in hospitality, leisure or tourism.

According to Indeed Salaries, a Travel Agent earns an average salary of £20,472 per year. In-house Travel Agents typically get both a base salary and commissions. The amount can vary from agency to agency depending on the location and the applicant’s experience.
