What does a Packer do?
A Packer is employed to work in a warehouse, storage depot or shipping facility where they prepare items for delivery to customers. Packers prepare customer orders by locating the correct items in storage areas. They ensure that goods are undamaged before safely wrapping and packaging them. They are responsible for loading goods into lorries or shipping containers for delivery, while also updating order logs to ensure that goods can be tracked. Packers are often required to assist with other warehouse duties too, including cleaning duties and stocking shelves.
Packer skills and qualifications
Packers need excellent knowledge of warehousing procedures, alongside practical packing skills. They also require suitable warehouse qualifications, including the ability to safely operate industrial equipment. A successful Packer candidate will also have various prerequisite skills and qualifications that typically include:
- Ability to accurately update product records and customer invoices
- Knowledge of the different industrial packaging techniques and materials
- Ability to use barcode and radio frequency scanners to locate and identify goods in the warehouse
- Up to date knowledge of industrial health and safety policies that are applicable to warehouses
- Ability to spend long periods of time on their feet
- Ability to lift 20 kg safely
- Ability to safely and correctly stack goods on pallets for bulk shipments
Packer experience requirements
Packers are expected to have a minimum of one year of warehouse experience to be successful in the role. Employers also look for applicants with experience working in similar roles, such as Order Pickers and Warehouse Assistants. Employers also value experience working in other parts of the supply chain, such as stock rooms or as Delivery Drivers or Lorry Drivers.
Packer education and training requirements
Packers require good GCSE results in English and maths, which shows employers that they have the ability to communicate well and carry out basic arithmetic tasks. Employers don’t require candidates to have any further education, as training can be provided on the job. Employers often offer apprenticeships which provide entry-level candidates with the required warehouse training.
