Care Home Assistants help people with various disabilities and challenges improve their standard of living by assisting them with their daily activities. They assist the elderly, people who suffer from mental or physical disabilities or the terminally ill. Care Home Assistants typically either travel to people’s homes to provide care for them there or they work at a care facility. Apart from assisting patients with their day-to-day activities, Care Home Assistants also provide emotional support. They ensure the overall wellbeing of their clients by offering companionship, helping them pursue their hobbies and facilitating outings and trips.

Care Home Assistant skills and qualifications

Care Home Assistant works with vulnerable people and assist them with intimate tasks such as bathing and getting dressed. They are also responsible for providing patients with emotional support and care. For these reasons, Care Home Assistants need to be compassionate and sensitive people. A successful Care Home Assistant candidate will also have various other prerequisite skills and qualifications that typically include:

  • Ability to work well in a team, as the job often requires working closely together with other healthcare professionals
  • Patience and the ability to remain calm and collected in crises
  • Ability to relate to people from a variety of backgrounds
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to listen to patients and clearly verbalise information

Care Home Assistant experience requirements

The level of experience a Care Home Assistant needs depends on the position. Some employers may be willing to hire candidates with no experience and provide them with comprehensive on-the-job training. In contrast, other positions may require candidates with caregiving experience. Depending on the position, candidates may need to show specific experience and skills, such as experience in working with patients with spinal injuries or providing catheter care.

Care Home Assistant education and training requirements

There are no fixed education or training requirements for this occupation. Candidates may need a few GCSEs, including English and maths, to prove they have the required numeracy and literacy skills for the job. Candidates should develop their skills and knowledge by attending college courses.
