What does a Home Care Assistant do?

Home Care Assistants help elderly or infirmed people enjoy safe, comfortable and relatively independent lives at home. They assist their clients with a range of daily duties, including personal care, eating, taking medications, running errands and attending appointments. They also perform common domestic tasks on behalf of their clients. They provide as much or as little assistance as clients need to remain in their homes. They also keep home care organisations updated about their clients’ progress.

Home Care Assistant skills and qualifications

Home Care Assistants rely on their domestic and soft skills to effectively help their clients. A successful Home Care Assistant candidate will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications that typically include:

  • Understanding of geriatric health, mobility issues and nursing best practices
  • Problem-solving and efficient decision making, especially in emergency situations
  • Strong verbal communication skills, including active listening, to determine client needs and deliver progress reports
  • Organisation, multi-tasking and scheduling
  • Interpersonal skills, including relationship management, conflict management and willingness to access constructive feedback
  • Basic numeracy and literacy
  • Strong navigation and driving skills
  • Competent domestic skills, including cooking and cleaning

Home Care Assistant experience requirements

While professional experience is not required, many home care groups strongly prefer candidates with experience caring for the elderly or infirmed. Previous experience working in a home care setting is ideal. However, employers may hire applicants without this experience if they have other positive qualities. People with nursing backgrounds are also strong candidates.

Home Care Assistant education and training requirements

There is no formal education requirement for working as a Home Care Assistant as many home care groups provide on-the-job training. Candidates with a relevant national vocational qualification (NVQ) or similar are strongly preferred. A Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care are some of the best NVQs for Home Care Assistants. Home Care Assistants often attend care conferences and training programmes throughout their careers to expand their skills.

Home Care Assistant salary expectations

According to Indeed Salaries, the average salary for a Home Care Assistant in the UK is £9.98 per hour. Salaries vary according to experience, education, the employer and their location.
