What does a Chief Information Officer do?

A Chief Information Officer is the company executive responsible for the implementation, management and usability of computer and information technologies. Because technology constantly grows and reshapes industries across the globe, the role of Chief Information Officers has increased in importance and popularity. Chief Information Officers analyse how a range of technologies benefit the company or improve its current business process, and then they incorporate a system to achieve that improvement or benefit.

Chief Information Officer skills and qualifications

Chief Information Officers must be able to work in a fast-changing technological landscape and with the pressure and responsibility that comes with leading a company to success in this environment. Other skills and qualifications they must have to perform their duties effectively include:

  • Excellent knowledge of information technology infrastructure and systems
  • Ability to design and implement various IT systems
  • Data analysis skills
  • Problem-solving and creativity in designing workable solutions
  • Strong leadership and management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strategic planning and business growth skills
  • Project management skills

Chief Information Officer experience requirements

Chief Information Officers must have a proven experience in a senior IT role with management responsibilities. Many employers prefer candidates who have project management experience or a track record of strategic success alongside their IT expertise. Previous roles that have developed candidates’ analytical skills, understanding of business and industry knowledge are an advantage. Some employers prefer candidates who have experience working in one or more IT-related disciplines such as cloud storage, IT security, collaborative technologies, customer relationship management or resource planning.

Chief Information Officer education and training requirements

Companies often require a Chief Information Officer to have a bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as database administration, IT management, computer information systems or computer science. A master’s degree in business administration combined with a computer-related degree can help Chief Information Officer candidates run the business side of strategy, budgeting, hiring and development.

Chief Information Officer salary expectations

According to Indeed Salaries, the average salary of a Chief Information Officer in the United Kingdom is £31,913 per year. Their actual salary varies depending on several factors, including the scope of their role, the size of their company and geographical location.
