A Phlebotomist, or Certified Phlebotomy Technician, is responsible for taking blood samples from a patient. Their duties include preparing patients to have their blood taken and drawing blood from a patient safely.

Phlebotomist duties and responsibilities

Phlebotomists must provide reassurance to patients. They must also look after the mental and physical well being of their patients. The primary duties and responsibilities of a Phlebotomist include:

  • Using technical equipment to safely draw blood from patients
  • Explaining the process of drawing blood clearly to a patient
  • Reassuring and calming patients who might be nervous or scared of the procedure
  • Applying dressings to the wound created by drawing blood
  • Registering the blood and storing it in the correct environment
  • Sending blood samples to testing laboratories
  • Keeping track of blood samples and results that are returned after testing

Experienced Phlebotomist Required
We are looking for a professional experienced Phlebotomist to join our team in the Manchester area due to a high demand for our service.

Our company specialises in collecting cord blood and tissue samples (stemcells) for all of the private storage banks within the UK, and we are also the chosen preferred supplier for the NHS. These samples are collected from the placenta following our client's delivery at birth, therefore due to the unpredictable nature of childbirth our team are on-call for their clients 24/7 and must be available when called to attend their collection, (you would NOT be required to attend the whole length of the client's labour), however an essential part of this role is being able to travel to multiple hospital sites.

Suitable candidates must be:

  • Access to car with full UK driving licence

All of our team are self-employed, and payment is made per collection completed, the collection rate is £140 per collection.

  • Ensure that the samples are correctly labelled and put into the correct containers and otherwise properly treated so as to be suitable for the analysis requested.
  • Daily maintenance and procedures for phlebotomy areas.
  • Dispose of sharps, clinical and other waste appropriately, in accordance with Company's Infection Control Policy.
  • Work within the Company’s Infection Control Policy, principles and guidance in maintaining good high standard of hand hygiene and wearing of protective clothing.
  • Maintain working stocks of sample vials and any equipment required for the job ensuring such stock is in date and suitable for use as required.
  • Work with the team managers in the allocation of the daily work list and communicating with clients in relation to appointments.

Principle duties & responsibilities

· Assisting the service users in all personal care (including; washing , dressing, toileting, feeding and manoeuvring), whilst encouraging as much independence as possible;

· Ensuring that service users are presentable in appearance at all times;

· Assisting residents to move to the dining area at mealtimes and other communal areas for social activities and stimulation and to the privacy of their bedrooms at their request;

· Assisting service users to eat and drink, monitoring intake and reporting any concerns to the nurse in charge;

· Ensuring bedroom areas are kept tidy, pleasant and comfortable by making beds, regularly changing bed linen and emptying commodes;

· Ensuring dignity and respect is maintained at all times;

· Caring for service users’ property and that belonging to the care centre. When money is taken from a service users’ purse/wallet, the action must be witnessed by two auxiliaries;

· Completing all daily monitoring records in a timely matter;

· Reporting any changes in residents’ conditions to the nurse on duty;

· Reporting incidents to residents, staff or visitors to the nurse on duty, and record it on the accident/incident form;

· Cleaning up spillages as they occur using appropriate equipment supplied and specified in the Infection Control Policy;

· Working within the guidelines of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, staff handbook and company Health and Safety Policy;

What does a Phlebotomist do?

A Phlebotomist works as part of a nursing team within hospitals and National Health Service (NHS) clinics. Phlebotomists also work in laboratories as part of research teams. Their work involves explaining procedures and reassuring patients before they see a medical specialist. Phlebotomists use a variety of techniques to safely draw blood. They then ensure that blood samples are accurately labelled and correctly stored in the right facility.

Phlebotomist skills and qualifications

Phlebotomists require technical and scientific skills. They also require good communication, nursing and interpersonal skills. A successful Phlebotomist candidate will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications that typically include:

  • Technical phlebotomy and venipuncture
  • Blood sampling with a finger stick method
  • Arterial extractions for blood samples
  • First aid qualifications

Phlebotomist experience requirements

A Phlebotomist needs experience demonstrating a duty of care towards patients. Many applicants have previous experience volunteering in local care homes. They might also have experience working as a Healthcare Assistant within a local NHS Trust. Experience providing first aid and basic medical care is good. Applicants can acquire experience working as a volunteer for St. Johns Ambulance.

They can also acquire the necessary skills through working as a volunteer at a blood bank. Experience working in customer-facing roles in other industries is also useful. Look for experience offering customer service in a restaurant or shop. Interpersonal and communication skills that can be transferred to the job of a Phlebotomist are very helpful.

Phlebotomist education and training requirements

Phlebotomists are required to have at least two General Certificates of Secondary Education (GCSEs). Technical training is also provided on the job. Colleges offer prospective candidates vocational courses or diplomas in healthcare. Employers can offer healthcare apprenticeships as a practical route into their roles. Candidates with no experience may qualify if they’re eager to learn.

A university degree is not required, however, Phlebotomists can acquire training from a Bachelor’s of Sciences Degree (BSC) in Nursing or Healthcare. Skills such as venipuncture can help translate across to the role of Phlebotomist.
