What does an IT Manager do?
The responsibilities of an IT Manager’s varies based on a company’s needs, but typically focuses on computer networks. IT Managers determine new hardware and software needs, oversee code requirements and run cables to new work areas. The IT Manager runs tests to verify that the components of the system are functioning at maximum efficiency.
IT Managers build and implement the systems architecture, direct the work of Systems Analysts and Security Analysts. They also manage personnel verifying the completion of their tasks and are involved in their hiring and training. Experience in Web development, virus removal, cleaning infected hard drives and stripping hardware after a security breach occurs are the vital skills of an IT Manager. Strong candidates must also have knowledge of or experience in cloud architecture. Other valuable experience includes leading and managing large IT projects and rolling out IT infrastructures across various technologies. Experience with databases, database storage systems and phone systems are required as well.
IT Manager education and training requirements
A Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Information Systems or Computer Science is required. Sometimes a Foundation Degree, university course, Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computer Networking and Security, Networking Communications Systems, Computer Science or Digital Communications is accepted. Some companies honor apprenticeships, training with a provider or industry certification. The IT Manager must have two to five years’ experience in IT operations or two-plus years of IT department supervisory experience. In-depth knowledge of Google Apps administration, Microsoft Windows, service desk and network administration is also necessary for the role. Proven record of problem-solving and project management skills is usually appreciated.
