Maintenance Assistants are responsible for conducting general maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, replacing plug sockets and light switches. They also conduct plumbing repairs. They perform routine health and safety checks to ensure that fire alarms, fire extinguishers and other safety equipment works. Maintenance Assistants respond to emergency calls outside their normal hours. Maintenance Workers liaise with and oversee contractors to ensure adequate resources and planning.

Maintenance Assistants need the following skills to effectively respond to routine and emergency maintenance requests:

Experience of working in a related field such as construction or shop fitting is also useful. Candidates that have held posts requiring practical skills such as maintaining electrical items or assembling furniture will have an advantage.

There are no specific educational requirements for a Maintenance Assistant, but many employers prefer candidates who have GCSEs equivalents in maths and English. Candidates who have completed training in domestic appliance repair, gardening or construction are useful. Many colleges offer NVQs in Building Maintenance Multi-trade Repair and Refurbishment Operations, which are ideal for Maintenance Assistant roles.
