What does a Maintenance Assistant do?
Maintenance Assistants are responsible for conducting general maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, replacing plug sockets and light switches. They also conduct plumbing repairs. They perform routine health and safety checks to ensure that fire alarms, fire extinguishers and other safety equipment works. Maintenance Assistants respond to emergency calls outside their normal hours. Maintenance Workers liaise with and oversee contractors to ensure adequate resources and planning.

Candidates that have held posts requiring practical skills such as maintaining electrical items or assembling furniture will have an advantage.

There are no specific educational requirements for a Maintenance Assistant, but many employers prefer candidates who have GCSEs equivalents in maths and English. Candidates who have completed training in domestic appliance repair, gardening or construction are useful.
