What does a Data Manager do?

Data Managers oversee the development and use of an organisation’s data systems and ensure that all incoming and outgoing data processes run smoothly and securely. They also collect, organise and analyse data in order to identify patterns and draw conclusions that may be useful for a company. An important aspect of the job is transforming complex statistical information into formats that are easily understandable. To achieve this, Data Managers employ various visualisation tools, such as graphs to effectively present their findings to executive members. Such reports provide valuable information regarding how a company can improve its performance.

Data Manager skills and qualifications

Data Managers need a variety of skills that range from technical acumen to interpersonal skills. Apart from analysing and manipulating data systems, they also need to interact with co-workers and others when reporting to management. A successful Data Manager will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications that typically include:

  • Solid knowledge of big data tools like Azure, as well as database systems like SQL
  • Familiarity with data visualisation and analytics tools, such as Tableau
  • The ability to decipher and organise large amounts of data
  • Excellent analytical skills to effectively scrutinise data for inaccuracies
  • The ability to produce informative, relevant and user-friendly reports
  • Solid programming skills and in-depth knowledge of statistical methods
  • The ability to confidently address a group of superiors and effectively present findings

Data Manager experience requirements

To obtain a data management position, candidates typically need previous experience in data management and analysis. Proven experience in supporting and implementing complex data management systems and maintaining high-standard data security practices is valuable. In addition, applicants typically need to show proficiency in relevant programming languages, database systems and big data tools. Experience in quality assurance and the development of data visualisation is also beneficial.

Data Manager education and training requirements

Candidates will need a bachelor’s degree in subjects like computer science, computer engineering, statistics or business administration. However, some positions may require a master’s qualification. A Master of Business Administration (MBA) in information systems is useful in this field, as the course provides a good mix of business and technical subjects. Candidates can also develop their knowledge and skills in the field by obtaining professional qualifications. The Data Management Association of the U.K., for instance, offers qualifications like the Certified Data Management Professionals (CDMP) designation.

Data Manager salary expectations

According to Indeed Salaries, the average salary for a Data Manager in the UK is £38, 254 per year. Salaries vary, however, depending on factors like location and level of experience.
