Head Cashier duties and responsibilities

Head Cashiers supervise and train all cashiers and maintain a positive work environment. Their other duties and responsibilities include:

  • Assisting customers and referring them to an Assistant Manager when needed
  • Scanning pricing information into the cash register system, collecting payments, verifying prices and quantities, issuing a receipt, wrapping and bagging merchandise
  • Voiding transactions of regular Cashiers, expediting price check request information and monitoring self-checkout areas
  • Resolving and balancing cash tills at the end of shifts, generating accurate till reports for each register, creating reports for credit and debit sales and accounting for many transactions
  • Hiring, training and supervising new Cashiers
  • Managing all check-out functions and checking Cashier money counting tasks
  • Serving as point of contact for customer service, Customer Service Associates, returns and exchanges
  • Listening to customer complaints and questions and referring them to the Assistant Manager when required
  • Following store procedures regarding coupons, gift cards, giveaways and the selling of specific items such as cigarettes and alcohol

Head Cashiers play a vital role in many retail companies. They work with Store Managers and other Cashiers to provide excellent service to customers visiting the store. In addition, Head Cashiers prepare a schedule for all Cashiers and maintain a detailed awareness of every item’s location within the store. They also answer customer questions about products. In some cases, they make reservations, prepare takeout orders, weigh produce and bulk foods. In many companies, a Head Cashier meets with the store’s management regularly to discuss issues and concerns. Head Cashiers typically work indoors and stand for extended periods of time.

A successful Head Cashiers candidate will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications to perform their duties effectively, these typically include:
