Successful Process Engineers are goal-oriented and focused on process improvement. They also have an in-depth understanding of project management systems and standards. A successful Process Engineer will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications that typically include:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency in various software such as Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Critical and logical thinking skills and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent spacial reasoning and ability to view data in two or three-dimensions
  • Ability to work calmly in emergency and high-pressure situations
  • Ability to lead, manage and persuade others to change work practices
  • In-depth understanding of process engineering software and systems
  • Familiarity with government regulation and safety measures

Process Engineer experience requirements

Candidates must have proven experience working in process engineering, chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, mechanical engineering or a related field. They must also have proven experience working with engineering software packages such as CAD and AUTOCAD. Employers also prefer candidates with additional experience in process simulations, standard operating procedure assessments and system integration into business environments.

Project Engineer education and training requirements

The minimum entry requirement for a Process Engineer position is a bachelor’s degree in chemical, industrial, biochemical, mechanical engineering or a related field. For a senior-level Project Engineer position, candidates with a master’s degree or doctorate in manufacturing, chemical or material process engineering is preferable. Many employers prefer candidates with a chartered (CEng) status with the Engineering Council, as it shows the candidate’s commitment and professionalism to the field. They also prefer candidates who have a certification in Six Sigma or completed training in techniques and tools of process improvement.
