What does a Fitter do?
A Fitter works as a member of a construction group, reading project plans and blueprints in order to complete their tasks. Their areas of expertise are in the welding and upkeep of pipework, valves and pumps that are frequently found in large commercial buildings and factories. They work to install these fixtures on time and within budget.

Fitter experience requirements
A strong foundation and knowledge of building and construction are crucial for all applicants. If you are looking to fill an entry-level position where applicants start in a lower role, such as a General Engineering Operative or Craft Worker and eventually progress to become a Fitter, they must still have a general understanding of the tools they are required to use on a daily basis and how to maintain safety on a construction site. If this not an entry-level position, applicants should have at least two years of experience as a Fitter or in a high-level apprenticeship.

Most Fitter job applicants need to have completed a university course and received their diploma in one of the following areas: engineering, welding, plumbing and heating or building services engineering. After receiving their diploma, most people will complete an engineering pipe fitter or pipe welder advanced apprenticeship for a few years, which can be viewed as similar experience to an entry-level job.
Some Fitters have no formal schooling and start their career as a General Engineering Operative or Craft Worker and learn how to become a pipe fitter through on-the-job training. Most positions will need applicants to have industry safety certification through the Client Contractor National Safety Group.
