A Merchandiser, or Dealer is responsible for ensuring that goods are on display in a store at the right time and for the right price. Their primary duties include negotiating prices with suppliers, tracking and managing stock deliveries and conducting training sessions for other store staff.

Merchandiser duties and responsibilities

Merchandisers are responsible for leveraging product display to maximise sales. Their main duties include: 

    Deciding products to stock and creating purchase plans, in collaboration with Buyers
  • Creating a sales plan for stocked products
  • Preparing budgets, sales forecasts and profit/loss forecasts for the store
  • Managing stock levels and setting sales targets for store outlets
  • Analysing different price points to determine the best price for various items based on trends, colours, styles, etc.
  • Analysing sales trends for various outlets
  • Visiting manufacturers with Buyers to find out more about production cycles
  • Collaborating with other store employees such as Analysts and Buyers to achieve their goals

What does a Merchandiser do?

A Merchandiser handles the overall process of displaying goods in a retail store. They ensure that goods are displayed on time and at the right location. They also determine the pricing for these goods. Their goal is to maximise sales and generate more revenue for the company.

Merchandisers usually work with Buyers to decide what products will be stocked. They also create budgets and financial forecasts for the store. Merchandisers may work in a general position, or specialise as either Retail Merchandisers or Visual Merchandisers. Visual Merchandisers focus on designing the store layout and product displays.

Merchandiser skills and qualifications

Merchandisers have a combination of organisation, creativity and sales skills. They should also have great people skills and excellent mathematical skills. A successful Merchandiser candidate will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications that include: 

    Ability to work well in a team
  • Working knowledge of financial reporting principles
  • Knowledge of retail trends
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of basic word processing tools
  • Knowledge of sales and marketing principles
  • Excellent creativity and ability to innovate
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure environment

Merchandiser experience requirements

Merchandisers need to have one to two years of experience in the role. With three or five years of experience, they can become a Supervisor. For senior roles, Merchandisers must have seven to eight years of experience. A Merchandiser should also have experience working in stock control, making purchase and placement decisions for a retail outlet. A strong background in sales is required. In addition to working in retail, they should be able to manage suppliers and vendors and conduct staff training. Some employers require prospective Merchandisers to have some customer service experience and be familiar with designing store layouts.

Merchandiser education and training requirements

The minimum educational requirement for Merchandisers is a secondary school education, with passes in four or more General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSEs). Merchandisers don’t need a university degree to perform their job. However, a degree in retail business management, sales or a related field would be useful. Merchandisers in the fashion industry would benefit from a degree in fashion buying and merchandising. Some employers require candidates to complete training programs, such as a Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Retail Operations and a Level 3 Certificate in Procurement and Supply Operations. Some employers require prospective Merchandisers to have completed an apprenticeship with a retailer.

Merchandiser salary expectations

According to Indeed Salaries, Merchandisers in the UK earn an average salary of £9.29 per hour. This figure varies depending on factors such as, the industry, years of experience, level of seniority and geographical location.
